Nap/Quiet time is from approximately 12:30pm until 2:30pm daily for children over 12 months of age. Individual cots are set up within the classrooms and the lights are turned off. Quiet instrumental music is played to help the children relax. Handicare supplies the cot sheets and blankets. You can bring blankets or a stuffed animal from home if you wish.
Naptime is considered a rest time or quiet time. All children under five years of age must remain on their cots for a minimum of 30 minutes. Many of the children sleep during this time. After the initial 30 minutes, children that who do not sleep are given quiet activities to do within their own classrooms. There is at least one staff person in each classroom during naptime. The lengths of the childrens naps are determined by the parents requests and the childs needs. If your child has trouble falling asleep at night, you may request that the childs naptime be restricted to a minimum of 30 minutes.
Infants have a separate crib room available to them for sleeping. The crib room staff is available to rock infants to sleep, to assure they are resting peacefully, and to return awake infants to their classroom. Handicare supplies all crib sheets and sleep sacks and washes them daily. If your child has sensitivity to our soap you may bring in your own sheets & blankets.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (commonly known as SIDS) kills over 2000 infants each year. The exact cause is not known but the number of deaths has decreased each year since risk factors have been identified and safety precautions are followed. To help prevent SIDS, Handicare staff will place all sleeping infants under 12months on their backs to sleep. Sleep sacks will be used instead of blankets in cribs to reduce the chance of over heating. Infants that do not sit or roll independently will be turned to their backs if they inadvertently roll to their tummy when sleeping
